What is Vegan Leather?

A lot of my products are made with ‘Vegan Leather’.

but what the heck is vegan leather?

The dictionary defines leather as:

the skin of an animal, with the hair removed, prepared for use bytanning or a similar process designed to preserve it against decay andmake it pliable or supple when dry.

Many people, (such as myself) prefer the skin of these sweet little guys to remain…well…ON these sweet little guys!  This is where the ‘vegan’ part comes in.

So what the heck is it made of then?

‘Vegan Leather’ is a term that encompasses quite a few different fabrics.  It can be made of different types of vinyls, acrylics, synthetic polyamides, and microfibers, and often is made from a combination of two or more of those materials.

A fibrous and strong base layer is chosen, and then the manufacturer coats this layer with a mixture of one or more of the above mentioned materials.  It is then stamped, or imprinted with the desired texture.

The majority of faux leather one usually sees is made to simulate the standard cow hide leather that is used most often, like in the above photo.

But thanks to our ability to create vegan leather alternatives, the possibilities are (almost) endless!

We can now enjoy the beautiful patterns that nature has given us, without harming the living creatures they’re attached to.

Yay innovation!

And this exotic faux Emu leather :

We can even add beautiful and vibrant colors to these textures!

As an artist and creator, I find texture very important as a design element, and I love that there are so many animal-friendly options out there to create endless combinations for my clients!

While faux leather is available in many different weights and finishes (you wouldn’t want your pleather leggings to be made out of decorator vinyl!), I have found upholstery vinyl to be the most durable when it comes to bag and wallet construction.

So, there you have it.  A quick run-down of what it means when something is labeled ‘vegan leather’.

There IS another, very cool type of vegan leather that I haven’t mentioned here, but that’s because I feel that it deserves its own post!  So if you were hoping I was going to mention cork leather…hang tight!  There’s a pretty rad post coming 😀

What’s that? You’ve never heard of cork leather?

Oh man.  I can’t wait to clue you in on this awesome new(ish) textile I’ve completely fallen in love with!

See you next time… when I ‘un-cork’ the mystery!

Listen…if you’re going to follow my blog…you’re going to have to deal with some puns. Possibly some really bad ones.

You’ve been warned.

P.S. Here’s a behind-the-scenes, in-progress peek of some brand new wristlets I created using a gorgeous, gold metallic finish faux leather!

You’ll have to keep an eye on the etsy shop to see the finished product though 😉
